“Doing service learning is not just
helpful to students, it also plays an important role in the community,” Springer said.
“Service
learners are a necessity. They help provide interventions for students who
struggle with literacy, math and behavior by providing one-to-one instructional
support.” Lansing Reo School Principal Kim Johnson Ray said.
Many
MSU students are doing community service at Lansing Reo School. Most of them
would be assigned to a specific class and help students there for lunch or
activities, or sometimes do one-to-one tutoring.
“I
really enjoyed the time I spent there,” education major student Tianshu Hong,
who did service learning at Lansing Reo School last year, said.
There
are a lot of choices for students to choose where to do service learning.
“We
partner with over 370 community agencies and we have hosted different kinds of
programs, pretty much anything someone wants to do we can find them a partner,”
Springer said.
“The
agencies tell us how many students they need and specific time and all these
are online, students can always come in and talk to someone whether to figure
out what they want to do or they’re part of a group like you are part of a club
here on campus and you guys want to do a service project, we can help you with
that too,” Springer said.
“I
also work with groups that go to internationality or in different places around
the country and do work, for example, they might go over spring break in a
couple weeks, we have 13 trips getting ready to go to different places,” said
Cradit.
“They
all really like it, we have a lot of students who go once and they come back
year after year and continue doing it cause they really enjoy it,” Cradit said.
